Heartsdales – Super Star

Artist: Heartsdales
Album: Super Star
Release Date: March 2, 2005
1. Intro~the eclipse~
The introduction for this album is pretty interesting with a mixture of crystal-like sounds. It’s a bit messy, but it’s pretty interesting to listen to overall.
2. I See You
I really like the introduction of this song with the piano and one of them yelling “Who’s gonna party harddddd!?”. It’s rather catchy. The verse is less interesting and rather monotone with less of an accompaniment. Rum is constantly flat and lacks support in her singing for the chorus. The chorus is still a bit catchy, though. The verses are extremely messy, though, and have very poor connection to the rest of the song. It fits terribly with the rest of the song.
3. Shining
Rum continues with her poor singing in this next song. I don’t even know what to say to this song. It’s messy melodically, and in the arrangement. Poor singing, and Jewel’s rapping doesn’t stand out much here as I’m mostly distracted by the somewhat electropop arrangement. I’m not even sure what’s happening in this song at times and the whole arrangement feels messy. The melody for the chorus is kind of cute, though.
4. Super Star
For once, I really find the string introduction of this next song really catchy. It has a bit of a turntable mixing with their voices, and the cute bell sounds accompanies the rapping at the beginning. The rap is energetic and works with the accompaniment for once, rather than them being separate entities in the song. The accompaniment is a little tacky, but it’s also immensely cute. XD
5. We Love The Music
And the singing is back in this next song. It’s amazing how Rum singing can make the song so much more immensely worse than it actually was. Support your voice. The song is supported by synths in the background, but nothing in the song really stands out here either. The melody of the chorus continues to be rather cute, although I think part of that is because Rum has a very light voice.
6. Rum Interlude/Hip Hop Barbie
Rum rapping is so much better. Enjoyable interlude.
7. Darlin’ Darkin feat. ZANE (three NATION)
This next song has a nice piano chord progression as the main accompaniment, and it’s mostly played is a short, detached manner as everyone else in the song raps. Rum sounds a bit better here has she reaches notes on the first line she sings, although she still goes flat in the later lines. This is a pretty enjoyable track, though. I enjoy the duet between the featured male rapper and Rum, even if they’re off. The song gets a little bit too repetitive, but it’s not a nice sound overall.
8. Bailamos?
As the title probably indicates, the song has a bit of a latin flavour to it. I especially like the heavier strings as the beat. This song is probably my favourite on the album so far. Rum doesn’t sound as bad singing in Spanish here, and I really like the arrangement of the song. There’s a lot of small instruments everywhere, and it sounds good. I like the pre-chorus, where they go “bum bum bum”.
9. LOVE & JOY
I remembered how terrified I was when I first heard this song coming from Heartsdales. I’m kind of used to their poppy rap style by now, and this song is pretty catchy. The rapping is very energetic, and I enjoy the synths they have in the background. Rum is still flat, but the chorus is quite a nice melody. I really like the bridge here with the heavier synths. It feels out of place in the song, though.
10. Jewels Interlude/Gangsta CHIC
In contrast to Rum’s interlude, this interlude is much more aggressive and it has a lot of attitude in it. I find it funny that the people in the background are yelling “Get drunk now!”.
11. GET DRUNK feat. Mummy-D (RHYMESTER)
… oh wait. I get it now XD. MISTA DRUNK. ORLY. That hilarious note aside. The song has the same aggressive feels as the previous song, and I enjoy the addition of synths throughout the song. The chorus continues the hilarious yellings of “Get drunk now!” over and over. Apparently these girls support alcoholism. I’m sure this song would be more hilarious if I felt like figuring out what they were saying in Japanese. “LIKE M&Ms MELT IN YOUR MOUTH AND NOT YOUR HANDS”. Now where have I heard Jewels saying something like this? XD (If you have no idea, check out their second album).
12. Sister Sister
Of course, Rum will sooner or later come back with her poor singing. My ears hurt a little bit. As energetic these girls are when they rap, I eventually get really bored of this song. Rum still sounds like she’s dying when she sings. Please stick to rapping <3.
13. Paradise feat. Kato Miliyah
Our resident I-was-stuck-with-a-terrible-third-album-cover is featured in this next song, and at least she brings up the level of singing on this album. She sings wells; so much better than Rum. I really like the chorus for this song, though. It’s catchy and sung well by Miliyah. I don’t particularly care for the rapping parts of this song at all.
14. Color of Love
This next song has quite a nice sound overall, and it’s not bad at all. The lighter sound of this song works well with the melody of the song, even if I find Rum more mechanical than usual in her singing here, and it eventually leads to the downfall of this song. It makes it feel like the song drags on for no apparent reason.
15. fantasy
“YOU DOWN WITH FANTASY?” “Yeah you know me!” Aside from th really annoying introduction, The rapping is pretty solid, and for once, Rum’s voice works well with the melody. Her light voice works in this song for some reason. The song is quite nice, aside from the inane yelling at the beginning of the song.
Overall -
Favourite Track: Bailamos?
Amusingly, this album fared better than I thought it would, considering how terrified I was of Heartsdales’ music after they turned to their poppy rap in their singles. Of course, I didn’t find it as catchy as their previous effort when they were being produced by VERBAL. However, their self-produced material isn’t terrible and some of it is kind of catchy. The “Get drunk” song gave me more amusement than it probably was supposed to. Their English lyrics lower my intelligence. In addition, Rum still has the same problem with her singing: poorly-supported, nasally, flat. She has a nice voice, but poor technique. Not as boring as their first album, but not as catchy and well produced as their second album.
